Urban farming practices in Thika, Kenya

Feline and Lisa visited Kenya School of Agriculture’s Thika campus in Kenya this week! For project ‘Market driven training programs for the horticultural sector in Kenya’, we will develop new courses in the field of future-proof and sustainable farming. After assessment with relevant stakeholders, urban farming was identified as one of the focus topics.

Urban farming is a collective term for agricultural practice, such as crop cultivation, applicable to farm in settings that are densely populated and not spacious on small plots of land, rooftops, vacant lots or community gardens. Urban farming fits perfectly within the transition towards local food production, community-based-agriculture, shorter value chains and increasing food security of vulnerable groups and climate vulnerability.

To get inspired by the urban farming practices already implemented at KSA, we paid a visit to see the setup in person, in Thika. What that looked like:
